1965 Vintage Ludwig Silver Sparkle Super Classic Drum Kit
Up for sale is a Vintage Ludwig Silver Sparkle Super Classic Drum Set with a 22” Bass Drum, 16” Floor Tom, and 13” Tom Tom. Made in USA at the Ludwig Drum Co., Chicago, Illinois.
This Vintage Ludwig Drum Set from the 1960s delivers deep, warm, resonant tones—exactly what you’d expect from a 1965 Super Classic Kit made at the Ludwig Drum Company at 1728 N. Damen Avenue in Chicago.
This No. 980P Super Classic Outfit features Ludwig’s famed 3-ply shell construction, reinforced with solid rock maple reinforcement rings. This Super Classic Drum Set also features Ludwig’s classic Bearing Edge, in Ludwig’s own words: “30 Degree inner cut with a 1/4" radius round over—producing a pure, well-rounded sonic footprint, the distinctive sound that set the standard for popular music throughout the 20th Century.”
The shells are in round and the reinforcement rings are in excellent condition. The bearing edges are original and true. They are in very good condition—no chips or dents, remarkably smooth and well-preserved for a drum set of this era—and they produce impeccable sound.
The chrome hardware and chrome-over-brass triple-flanged hoops, as well as the shell interior mounting screws and bolts, are all original and show signs of wear consistent with their age. All components are fully functional.
The set’s original silver sparkle finish is also showing its age, including some fading and discoloration. The color from certain angles and in certain light can vary and appear uneven—though there are absolutely no cracks, tears, or damage to the wrap. The seams of the wrap are tight and fully functional, with some lifting, but this is cosmetic and doesn’t affect the extraordinarily rich and full sound these drums produce.
This set’s only real flaw lies with its bass drum hoops, which are in much worse condition than they appear. Without question, they should be replaced, and I have decreased the list price to accommodate this. Fortunately, however, these hoops are widely available, both vintage and new.
So, hoops aside, this is a great sounding classic kit. However, if you are looking for a set to spring from the box eternally youthful and out-of-the-box beautiful, this kit is not for you. If you are looking for a genuine 1960s Ludwig set that delivers Ludwig’s deep, warm, resonant tones—and sounds phenomenal—I’d highly recommend this kit.
